Volunteers are needed for focus group discussions on physical activity and nutrition!
The School of Health and Environment is seeking faculty, staff, and students to participate in these discussions to help increase physical activity and improve nutrition on the UMass Lowell campus. Each discussion will take approximately two hours, one hour during the winter and one hour during the spring or fall of next year. The locations and times of the focus group discussions will be determined based on the availability and schedules of the participants. 12/7 (Friday) WUML Lowell 91.5 FM Presents: ROCK FOR TOTS, in the VPAC on the 3rd Floor of Fox Hall, beginning at 6pm! Check back soon... Bands will be announced closer to the date! All proceeds from the concert will be sent to ONE LOWELL, a charitable, civic action group that stresses progressive action and access to vital services for citizens of Lowell, Massachusetts.

12/11 (Tuesday) Chancellor Marty Meehan will speak to Dr. Fred Lewis's Political Science classes at 12:30 p.m. in O'Leary 222. All UML students are invited to attend. An alumnus of UML’s Political Science program, the chancellor will comment and answer questions on current developments in national politics as well as matters of general concern to UMass Lowell students.

12/11 (Tuesday) "Playing with the Boys: Why Separate is not equal in Sports," is a talk by Eileen McDonagh and Laura Pappano. In their forcefully argued book, McDonagh and Pappano show in vivid detail how women have been unfairly excluded from participating in sports on an equal footing with men. This event starts at 7:30pm at the Campus Rec Center.

12/13 (Thursday) "Scenes from a Parish," a film by James Rutenbeck that explores two yeras un the life of St. Patrick's Church in South Lawrence, a traditionally Irish-American parish undergoing huge changes that reflect dramatic demogrpahic and economic shifts in the city. Applying to Graduate school? Then your in luck! The Psychology Club is offering a computerized GRE practice test! There will be two opportunities to take the exam on campus and registration deadlines are coming soon! The first test will be held on Tuesday November 6th; the deadline to sign up is Monday, October 29th. The second test is on Tuesday, November 13th; the deadline for that exam will be Monday, November 5th. These tests will be taken in O'Leary Library, Room 300B, from 12:45 pm - 4:30 p.m. Come and get your money's worth as the test admission is only $10 compared to the usual rate of $140. The test is sponsored by Kaplan. The proceeds will be donated to UMass Lowell's Psychology Club for their annual "Welcome Pack Drive" organized by the city of Lowell's Department of Social Services; providing orphaned and unfortunate young children and adolescents necessities such as books, clothes, toiletries, ect. Health Services and the "No Regrets" Group will be celebrating National College Alcohol Awareness Week starting today through Friday, October 26. On Wednesday, October 24th, stop by the South Campus Quad for mock-tails and beer goggle obstacle course races. Throughout the week there will be tables set up at Southwick and McGauvran offering information on alcohol and giveaways! Sign a pledge and you will be entered to win prizes where including an New iPod Nano/Video and gift certificates to Shorty's Mexican Roadhouse.

The Bookstore and the English Department will host best-selling author Sebastian Junger, author of "The Perfect Storm" and "A Death in Belmont." You can catch the event TONIGHT at 7:30pm at the Comley-Lane Theatre in Mahoney Hall on South Campus.

UMass Lowell's new forensic science degree – being offered for the first time next fall – is the only undergraduate program of its kind at a public university in Massachusetts and one of only two in New England. The bachelor of science in chemistry with forensic science option is a collaboration between the University's Chemistry Department and Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology, as well as the Lowell Police Department. "Driving the creation of the program is the need for more forensic chemists in Massachusetts," says Eugene Barry, Chemistry Department chair. There are only 100 certified professionals working in the state police crime lab. However, more than 2,000 violent crimes were committed in 2005, according to a report from the Massachusetts Commonwealth Fusion Center. The new degree meets standards set by the American Academy of Forensic Sciences' Education Programs Accreditation Commission.

The five-time gold medal champion, Spartans Drum and Bugle Corps, has received one more award to add to its collection, claiming this year's Division II World Championship. The roughly 100-member band traveled to Pasadena, Calif., in mid-August where they competed against, more than 20 other drum and bugle corps from around the country. The Spartans Drum and Bugle Corps, founded in 1955, has no affiliation with any particular school in the area, but some of our own UML students hold presence! Congratulations to you! The community-based organization is run by volunteer parents, past corps members and a professional teaching staff. In past years, the corps has won World Championships four times, performed in Disney World six times and participated in the Miss America Parade seven times. They have also performed for seven former presidents: Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan and Bush. In more recent years, the Spartans have played at both inaugural parades for current President Bush.

The race is held in honor of Jennifer D’Amour, a member of the UML cross country and track and field teams from 1994-98, who lost her life in a car accident in May 1999. The Relay for Life, through the American Cancer Society, will be hosting its first annual Relay for Life here at UMass Lowell, sponsored by the Office of Student Activities & Multicultural Affairs. Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money to help the American Cancer Society save lives. During the event, teams of people gather at schools, fairgrounds or parks and take turns walking or running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times.

11/9 Patti Quigley: "Beyond the 11th"

Patti Quigley, co-founder of the charitable group "Beyond the 11th" will be speaking on campus. "Beyond the 11th" is a group started by widows of men killed on the hijacked planes of 9/11. They work to provide assistance and support to widows and children in Afghanistan.

The University’s Health Services will offer two Flu Shot Clinics in November. This shot will help prevent the annual strain of flu expected during the current season. Cost is $15 and is open to the entire University community.
